Hi guys! I am Kyari, a Diamond Jungle/ADC main, playing since Season 3 of League of Legends. Riot Games released the mysterious “Ruined King” last July 14, 2021, and this will be an in-depth guide tackling his items, combos, runes, counters, skills, and pathing. This is “How to Carry With Jungle Viego.” I hope you enjoy this guide, and best of luck in the fields of justice!
Viego Skills
Before diving right into “how to carry with jungle viego,” let me explain Viego’s skills first. The Ruined King’s kit is made for skirmishes. Viego is not a demanding champion to master, and unlike Riven, his combos are pretty straightforward. However, since he excels in skirmishes, combo executions are still important to win fights.
Passive: Sovereign’s Damnation
Whenever Viego assists in killing an enemy, he can temporarily possess that champion. Viego will inherit that champion’s items, attacks, and non-ultimate abilities during the possession. Not only that, but Sovereign Damnation will also grant Viego a percentage of the possessed champion’s maximum health and movement speed toward enemy champions. To maximize team fighting damage, I recommend continuously using the passive for the ultimate (Heartbreaker) reset combo.
Q: Blade of The Ruined King
This Viego ability has both a passive and active effect. Blade of the Ruined King will be the primary skill you will use for Viego’s auto attack cancels.
Q Passive: Viego will deal bonus damage on-hit based on the enemy champion’s health and will hit the enemy twice if they are recently hit with an ability
Q Active: Viego will strike his blade forward, damaging all enemies hit
W: Spectral Maw
This grants an auto-attack reset like the Blade of The Ruined King ability. Viego will charge and hurl a mist that will damage and stun the first enemy hit. Spectral Maw will activate the double attack passive from the Blade of the Ruined King, and charging the skill will increase the stun duration and mist range.
E: Harrowed Path
Viego will cast a mist on a nearby wall. While inside the mist, Viego will become camouflaged and gain attack and movement speed. Harrowed Path has a lot of uses; it can be used for movement speed in the jungle, trick enemies during ganks, and even hide the charge-up of Spectral Maw.
Ultimate: Heartbreaker
Viego will blink on the target location, dealing damage the lower the health of the enemy while other enemies in range get knocked away. Keep recasting his passive (Sovereign Damnation) because after possessing an enemy champion, Viego can recast the Heartbreaker for 1.5 seconds. Heartbreaker is the Viego’s main damage dealing skill during team fights.
How To Carry With Jungle Viego: Runes
Primary Tree
Conqueror
Most used rune on Viego until it was nerfed on patch 11.21. Because Conqueror is stacked extremely fast with his auto-attack resets, it is still a great choice for a bruiser playstyle and against tanky comps. Conqueror is also the safe choice for Viego because it gives him sustain and damage.
Press The Attack
This rune is good against squishy team comps since it will be easier to burst and assassinate enemies. Press The Attack focuses on bursting and single target damage, and some might argue that PTA is better than Conqueror because, during team fights, you will be trying to kill enemies as soon as possible to activate your ultimate resets.
Triumph
The 12% healing on takedowns provides a solid team fighting sustain for Viego.
Legend: Alacrity
Viego relies on attack speed, which is why this is a solid rune choice to maximize DPS. On top of that, this rune allows you to stack Conqueror faster.
Legend: Tenacity
A great alternative to Legend: Alacrity if you are against heavy crowd control compositions. Pair this rune with Mercury Treads for maximum effectiveness.
Secondary Tree
Inspiration: Magical Footwear and Cosmic Insight
Magical Footwear provides free 300 gold, which is a huge help for Viego—who has a weak early game—to build his first core item. At the same time, Cosmic Insight will reduce the cooldown of your spells and items—like the Immortal Shieldbow. Most pros run these runes because of the value it provides.
Resolve: Revitalize and Conditioning/Unflinching
If you want more flexible gameplay, then I recommend taking Resolve as your secondary rune tree. Viego will get a lot of value from the Revilatize rune because of the healing from his kit, while Conditioning is an excellent rune for additional tankiness in the late game because of the extra magic resist and armor.
Suppose the enemy team has a lot of crowd control. In that case, it is better to take Unflinching rather than Conditioning because of the tenacity bonus, which will be more helpful in the long run.
How To Carry With Jungle Viego: Combos
As mentioned previously, Viego’s kit is made for skirmishes. It is essential to execute these combos properly and consistently to maximize his effectiveness. You can also use summoner spells, like the flash, to perform more complicated combos. Always remember the Blade of the Ruined King passive to maximize your damage in skirmishes, jungle camps, and team fights.

How To Carry With Jungle Viego: How To Clear Camps
Red Start Full Clear
Red Buff > Krugs > Raptors > Wolves > Blue and Gromp > Scuttle or Gank
How to Red Start Full Clear:
- Kite the red buff towards the Krugs
- Kill both of the Krugs until the small ones remain. Drag all of the small Krugs toward your raptor camp before killing them
- Kite on the last second before killing the Raptors to prevent reset
- When the Wolves drop below half HP, kite them towards the blue buff and use your Spectral Maw to leash the Blue Buff
- Walk towards the Gromp and use smite on it. Finish both the Blue Buff and Gromp at the same time to maximize clear speed
Assess the situation, then decide whether to kill the Scuttle or gank lanes
Five Camp Clear to Scuttle and Gank (Red Buff)
Red Buff > Krugs > Raptors > Wolves > Blue Buff > Scuttle
Follow the red start full clear instructions but instead of clearing Gromp head towards the Scuttle, assess the situation to gank either the mid or top lane.
Blue Start Full Clear
Blue Buff and Gromp > Wolves > Raptors > Red Buff > Krugs
Start at the Blue Buff and kite towards the Gromp, use The Blade of the Ruined King (Q) on both the Gromp and Blue Buff
- Attack the Wolves and start kiting them towards the raptors when they reach half health.
- Start the Raptor camp and when they reach half HP, use Spectral Maw to leash the Red Buff
- Attack the Red Buff and start kiting it towards the krugs
- Start the Krug camp by smiting and focusing on the big ones for a quick clear
- Assess the situation, then decide whether to kill the Scuttle or gank lanes
Five Camp Clear to Scuttle and Gank (Blue Buff)
Blue Buff and Gromp > Wolves > Raptors > Red Buff > Scuttle
Follow the blue start full clear instructions but instead of clearing the Krug camp, head towards the Scuttle and gank after clearing
Difference Between A Full Clear And Five-Camp Clear
This is a situation where it varies in every game; that is why it is important to check your minimap every couple of seconds to check how your laners are doing. Full clears are simplified and will let you hit level 4 after the clear. Alternatively, if you have decided to do a five-camp clear, it will give you better early gank and invade opportunities on the enemy jungler.
How To Carry With Jungle Viego: Know All The Possible Items
Jungle Items:
Emberknife (Challenging Smite)
The primary smite choice for Viego. Don’t get me wrong, both smites are viable for Viego. However, since The Ruined King’s kit is made for skirmishes, I always use challenging smite to make some battles favorable because of the extra dueling power.
Hailblade (Chilling Smite)
Alternative to the Emberknife, the Chilling Smite is great for chasing down enemy carries more easily. I get Hailblade when I am against ranged junglers like Graves and Kindred because of their kiting potential, which is really hard to deal with as Viego.
Mythic Items
Immortal Shieldbow
Since Viego is a squishy champion, Immortal Shieldbow will provide him health, sustain, and shield from bursts. I always build this item if I want to last longer during team fights, and the enemy composition has many crowd control abilities.
Kraken Slayer
An uncommon mythic item choice for Viego, Kraken Slayer, will give the highest DPS possible for Viego. What’s more, Kraken Slayer (3rd attack) will easily proc because of Viego’s auto attack resets. The only catch is he will be prone to bursts during team fights. I recommend building this item if you are snowballing against squishy champions.
Divine Sunderer
Also a great Mythic alternative for Viego. Divine Sunderer is an excellent choice against really tanky teams because of the additional damage scaling on enemies’ maximum health. It also empowers the Legendary items with additional armor penetration and magic penetration.
Blade of The Ruined King (BoTRK)
The weapon of Viego himself, BoTRK, will help Viego shred high health champions. It is a great first item power spike because of the additional on-hit effects. It will scale really well with Viego’s Q (Blade of The Ruined King) and Ultimate (Heartbreaker).
Wit’s End
An excellent item choice against team comps with a lot of magic damage. However, weigh your item choices carefully. Even though Wit’s end will provide you sustainability against AP champions, you will miss out on the high damage that crit items give.
Death’s Dance
Like Wit’s End, Death’s Dance is an excellent choice against assassin or high AD team comps. Of course, you will also miss out on the damage of crit items. However, it will provide you with a more bruiser type of gameplay because of its sustain during team fights.
Sterak’s Gage
Similar to Blade of The Ruined King, this is one of the items that you should build every game. Sterak’s Gage will help Viego last through team fights because of the bonus health and Lifeline passive.
The Collector
As mentioned previously, Viego’s Q (Blade of the Ruined King) and R (Heartbreaker) apply on-hit effects. The passive of this item will significantly help assassinating enemies. Build this item to snowball against squishy enemy team compositions.
Infinity Edge (IE)
I always build this item alongside other critical items because of the bonus damage. The passive from IE will also apply to Viego’s Q (Blade of The Ruined King) and R (Heartbreaker).
Essence Reaver
The additional critical strike chance and damage per ability cast really helps Viego’s kit. I always run this item with Infinity Edge most of the time for the damage boost.
Lord Dominik’s Regards
The main anti-tank item. I build this item every game because of the additional critical strike chance and armor penetration. Paired with BoTRK, you can easily shred bruiser champions.
Guardian Angel
A great final item to finish your build. I always build this item if I always get bursted during team fights. Be careful dying during possessions, since you inherit enemy items, Guardian Angel will not work. That is why I recommend using R (Heartbreaker) as much as you can.
Spirit Visage
I rarely build this item because I will miss out on a lot of damage. However, the bonus health, regen, magic resistance, and healing provide a lot of tankiness and survivability against heavy magic damage compositions.
Boots
Mercury Treads
My number one choice when playing Viego, the tenacity that these boots provide will help you during team fights.
Plated Steelcaps
I only build this item against heavy attack damage compositions and when they have no crowd control. However, Mercury Treads will always be my primary choice because of the tenacity bonus.
How To Carry With Jungle Viego: Know Your Counters
Graves
He is one of the best junglers during the early game. A good Graves player will abuse his clear speed and try to invade you during the early parts of the game. Not only that, but his kiting potential will also be a huge problem to face as Viego.
Warwick
Never engage against Warwick because he will always win 1v1’s. However, Viego will still be stronger in the late game. Play with your team and scale to get items.
Rammus
Viego’s relies a lot on auto attacks and healing, and Rammus counters everything in your kit. To make matters worse, he is tanky during all stages of the game.
